Tom – tackling food waste at FareShare

Retiree Tom has been volunteering at FareShare Sussex in Brighton since October 2021.

He is an enthusiastic cyclist and wanted to put his hobby to positive use so became a volunteer electric bike delivery rider for FareShare.

FareShare receives surplus food from food companies that would otherwise go to waste and delivers it to local charities where it is transformed into thousands of meals and food parcels every week.

Tom picks up the daily delivery schedule, decides on the best route and, after completing bike safety checks, loads the bike and rides out. “If it’s a busy day I may need to do two runs, riding between 8 and 18 miles each shift. I often get people shouting out a cheery greeting (the bike is quite an eye-catching machine!) After deliveries I clean and secure the bike for the next day’s rider. If time permits, I get a rewarding lunch from the volunteer cooks at the warehouse!”

“Sussex FareShare is an incredibly welcoming place and whichever role you do, you are made to feel welcome from the moment you walk up the warehouse yard and into the door. The staff, including the CEO, make us feel valued for the work we do.”

“I have found volunteering at FareShare a hugely positive experience. There are not many jobs where strangers come up to you and thank-you for what you do.”

“Enthusiastic cyclist Tom wanted to put his hobby to positive use so became a volunteer electric bike delivery rider for FareShare Sussex.”
