Community Works Volunteer - Manqi

Manqi – matching volunteers with suitable roles

Manqi is one of our amazing Community Works volunteers and has been part of the Volunteer Centre team since 2015.

“I am an immigrant and started volunteering after I moved to the UK. It gave me the chance to get to know Brighton, to learn how an NGO in the UK works, and to meet new people.”

As a Matching and Guidance Volunteer she is responsible for helping willing volunteers in Brighton, Hove, Adur, and Worthing to find suitable volunteer roles.

“People get involved in volunteering for different reasons. Some people want to gain skills, some want to give back to society, some want to just get out and meet people and fight loneliness. I like hearing people’s stories and after an initial chat I start searching for the right volunteer role for them. I remember having a phone conversation with a man who just lost his wife and was feeling lonely. He wanted to meet new friends and I found him a role with East Brighton Parkrun. He is now a regular volunteer with them.”

Successfully matching willing volunteers to suitable volunteer roles makes Manqi feel happy. “Not only does it make me feel good to be able to help, but I have also gained a lot of confidence by talking to people.”

Besides the feel-good factor Manqi volunteers to give back to society and the local community. “An individual’s strength is limited. This role makes me feel I am doing something bigger, contributing to more than one organisation and helping to build a big volunteer network. Community Works has always been so supportive, and I have made some good friends here.”
