Katherine – mentee
Routes Project Officer, Katherine Shepherd, signed up to our mentoring programme to learn more about working in the charity sector from someone with long-term experience. In addition, she had taken on the voluntary role of Chair of Committee for her children’s school PTA and felt “it would be helpful to have someone to bounce ideas off and explore ways to develop the PTA’s fundraising capacity”.
She met her mentor for a couple of hours every month. “At our initial meeting we identified the areas I felt I needed help with and how I wanted to use our sessions together. Then our meetings usually involved reviewing actions from previous sessions, an update on what I was doing both in work and my PTA role, discussion and exploration of areas I felt I needed support with and action planning.”
“As well as offering advice, my mentor challenged me to look at things from a different perspective. She would ask questions to help me explore different ways to deal with certain situations.”
“I really enjoyed my mentoring meetings. They were hugely beneficial and productive but laid back and informal. I often felt like I was just chatting with a friend over coffee.”
Being involved in the mentoring programme has boosted Katherine’s confidence, given her an invaluable insight into how the charity sector works and provided her with tangible ideas to take forward. As a result of her mentoring sessions, she has successfully implemented constitutional changes to the PTA and was able to develop new fundraising initiatives.
