Judith – referring people to local services

Semi-retired teacher Judith is a Social Prescribing Volunteer for Together Co – Brighton’s loneliness charity.

As a Social Prescribing Volunteer, Judith helps people find and connect with local services and community groups that could be of benefit. It’s a free local service. Being a good listener is an essential trait to understand each individual’s situation and concerns.

Judith usually volunteers at a GP practice, however during the Covid-19 crisis she is volunteering from home offering phone appointments. Judith considers it ‘a privilege to help people with their personal challenges.’

“I see people with a range of issues from depression or anxiety to physical health issues. I think seeing a Social Prescribing Volunteer does make a difference. Just being there, listening. There are no long waits and it’s strictly confidential.

I refer people to all sorts of places. It’s all tailored to what the individual wants. It could be a money advice service or debt advice, looking for lunch clubs or over 50’s groups.

I enjoy giving something back. It’s lovely meeting people and it’s never the same. I feel more aware of the issues that people face, and it’s made me more open to different people.”
