David and Sophie – delivering PPE across Sussex

David is a Voluntary and Community Development Manager for the Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT).

“We have around 500 volunteers at SCFT. They are involved in a variety of clinical and nonclinical services: offering a high level of support to staff and delivering increased patient experience to SCFT patients. Many of our volunteers use their own skills and experience to support our patients.

For example, in Brighton and Hove we have a cohort of Breast-Feeding Peer Support volunteers who support new mothers with breast feeding. Currently, due to Covid-19, these volunteers are unable to offer face-to-face assistance, however they have created a closed Facebook group to continue their invaluable support for new mothers in this challenging climate.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19, SCFT have recruited volunteer drivers to help deliver PPE to sites across the Trust. To date they have delivered 188,000 pieces of equipment!”

Sophie has been volunteering with SCFT for 18 months in the Minor Injuries Unit at Crowborough War Memorial Hospital.

“When the pandemic took hold, I was no longer able to work in the MIU, but wanted to continue volunteering. As I have a driving license and a car, I offered my assistance as a delivery driver. I have really enjoyed delivering PPE, medical equipment, and other items to various hospitals and other SCFT sites in the community. Like the rest of the UK, I have such admiration for the NHS workers and feel honoured that I can continue to support SCFT, even if it’s in such a small way”.

David helped Alice find her volunteering role at SCFT.

“I have really enjoyed delivering PPE, medical equipment, and other items to various hospitals and other SCFT sites in the community.”
