Claire – making friendships through befriending

Nineteen-year-old Claire has been volunteering since the age of eleven!

“What motivates me as a volunteer is the impact you can have on people’s lives. When I was 14 and volunteering at a residential home, I befriended an elderly lady who adored dogs. So, I took my dog to meet her, and taught him to perform tricks for the residents. They loved every moment and the lady, who had been feeling lonely and low, said my visits with the dog brightened her week and gave her something to look forward to.”

Claire is currently a volunteer befriender for Time to Talk Befriending – a charity that tackles loneliness through engagement, connection and friendship. Every week she meets Angela for a two-hour chat.

“Angela loves to tell me interesting stories from her past. She has done so many amazing things in her life, which I hope someday I can achieve too. Spending time with her is rewarding, inspiring and enjoyable. We always say how the time flies when we’re together and I really feel like I’ve gained a friend.”

“Really getting to know an individual and creating new friendships is one benefit of volunteering but there are some many more! I feel greatly rewarded, super positive and happy after I volunteer. It’s life changing! It is also beneficial for work experience: I am currently training to become a primary school teacher and through volunteering in schools, I have gained an abundance of vital experience.”

“If you’re considering volunteering or helping in a local community then go for it! I can guarantee that, not only will you feel positive after volunteering, but you will make amazing friendships, learn new skills and you will learn so much from other people’s walks through life.”
