Volunteer Drivers For Young Carers Project

Do you have some spare time?
Are you a car owner driver?
The Carers Centre for Brighton & Hove is an independent charity supporting carers providing unpaid help to a relative or friend because they have a physical disability, learning disability, mental health problem, substance misuse problems or because they are elderly and frail. We aim to improve the quality of life for carers - including young carers from the age of 6 - and provide emotional and practical support in the local area.
Brighton and Hove Young Carers Project uses volunteer drivers to take children and young people to and from our activities.
Often parents of young carers find it difficult to transport their children and in many cases if we don't offer transport, the young carers wouldn't be able to come along to the clubs, groups and activities we run.  In the past the Project has used taxis to help transport young carers to clubs and activities, but this has proved expensive and offers an impersonal service to the children and young people. Volunteer drivers help reduce these costs, provide continuity and build trust between the young carers their families and the Young Carers Project.
All journeys are co-ordinated by the Young Carers Project Staff members and the amount of driving hours required will vary according to the amount of activities on during the month and driver(s) availability.
You will receive out of pocket travel expenses, training and monthly group supervision.

Benefits of the opportunity:

1. Develop and gain new skills including mentoring
2. Put your skills to use and make a lasting difference to someone's life
3. Meet and work with new and interesting people.

The only formal qualification required by volunteers is that they hold a full, clean driving licence.  Any experience of working with children would be useful.  As would previous experience of transporting children, including in small groups.  Applicants should have a good awareness of the need to operate in a safe, friendly and calm way.
