Mentoring programme gets under way

Mentoring programme gets under way

Earlier this year we matched 17 people from local charities and voluntary groups with our experienced, volunteer mentors. They’ve been busy meeting and they’ve told us that they’ve already greatly benefited from the one-to-one support they’ve received from their mentor.

They’ve been working with their mentors to address issues around:

  • business planing
  • organisational development
  • governance
  • time management
  • volunteer management
  • funding and finance
  • commissioning
  • people management

This year’s programme is will end in March 2017. We will shortly be looking for new people to participate in our 2017-2018 mentoring programme.

If you’re interesting in either having a mentor or being a volunteer mentor, read more about our mentoring programme or get in touch with our Volunteering Development Co-ordinator, Sue Shaw, on sue@bhcommunityworks.org.uk or 01273 234860.

Our volunteer mentors are drawn from all sectors across the local area. They’ve backgrounds in health, business, commissioning, management, coaching, and have been involved in supporting under-represented communities.

One of our mentors said that: “The opportunity has been incredibly rewarding for me on a personal and professional level in terms of developing my own mentoring and coaching skills, but it’s also been invaluable in terms of gaining a greater insight into the immense value the third sector contribute to the city. Even as a life long advocate of the third sector I’m astonished at the personal dedication and effort of my mentee and the great work they are doing for our most vulnerable population.  I think it would be great for more statutory commissioners to have the opportunity to engage as mentors – as a development opportunity for them but also to encourage a greater understanding of the sector and the role it plays.”

We’d like to thank all of our volunteer mentors and our volunteer, volunteer co-ordinator Peter, who have given their time and expertise so willingly.

“I am finding the whole process of having a mentor really helpful, interesting, challenging and good for me! My mentor is fabulous and keeps me on my toes. They have got my measure and just started to push me against my comfort barrier. I don't enjoy it to be honest but they are absolutely right to give me a very kind shove. I really do have a lot to think about. I hadn't realised what a good process this would be. I have been 25 years in my job, and my mentor has helped me realise that there are other things in the world beyond work. I am grateful for this opportunity, and, by default my family are too! ”
