Policies and procedures
Writing a new policy or procedure can feel overwhelming. It can be difficult to know where to begin and what to include. To help you with this, we’ve gathered together a set of model policies and procedures and resources that will help you get started.
Why are policies and procedures important?
Policies and procedures help to ensure your service users’ have the best experience, create a safe and accessible environment for your activities, and enable your organisation to run consistently, smoothly and fairly. They’re also needed to meet legal, contractual and funding requirements.
Getting it right for your organisation
Your policies should relate to your organisation and your stakeholders.
What is suitable for one organisation may not be suitable for another. It is important that you think through what you actually need in place in your particular organisation and how it will work in practice.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the policies and procedures you adopt are both appropriate for your needs and comply with relevant legislation.
Your stakeholders should be engaged in developing and implementing your policies.
What's the difference between a policy and a procedure?
Policies say what your organisation wishes to happen eg we want everyone to have equal access to our services.
Procedures say how your organisation has decided to make it happen eg we will provide our information in different languages.
All policies need procedures to make them happen in practice.
Help and support
Whilst policies and procedures should be tailored to your organisation’s needs, there is guidance, and model policies and procedures you can use to help you get started:
- our guidance for larger voluntary and community organisations
- the Resource Centre has guidance for smaller community groups
- LGBT Switchboard has guidance for LGBT groups and organisations
